Supplemental Security Income

Supplemental Security Incomes (SSI) is a Federal needs-based program. It is designed to help aged, blind and disabled people including disabled children who have little or no income or resources. It provide cash to meet basic needs for food and shelter.

Since it is a needs-based program, your income and things you own (resources) are considered in determining your monthly benefit.

Supplemental Security Income benefits are not based on an individuals prior work history. Thus, claimants who did not earn enough taxable income to be eligible for SSDI may apply for SSI.
